“Saint Thérèse of Lisieux / Nantes Cathedral – 2025

Acrylic and mineral paint (Keim) on canvas 200x150cm.

At the invitation of the Diocese of Nantes, and to mark the reopening of the Saint-Pierre & Saint-Paul Cathedral in Nantes, Sébastien Bouchard painted a portrait of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux on a large canvas. It was presented on September 27th during the reopening of the Cathedral, which had suffered an arson attack in 2020.

The portrait is the result of research surrounding photographs of the saint, combined with a floral arrangement. The symbolism of the rose is highly significant in the saint’s life. He also designed and created the scenography on the temporary 5.5-meter-high wooden structure that holds the canvas before it is permanently hung in the cathedral chapel dedicated to Saint Thérèse. Once again, he incorporates the white rose motif directly onto the OSB wood to re-enchant the material, which serves as a reminder of the remaining works to come.
