Invited by the town of Sallertaine in Vendée—renowned for its vibrant arts, crafts, and artisan community—Sébastien Bouchard created a mural paying tribute to René Bazin (1853–1932). This French writer and academician was a major figure in regionalist literature. As an attentive observer of the rural life of his era, he sensitively and realistically portrayed traditional ways of life, peasant values, and social challenges, most notably in his most famous work, La Terre qui meurt (The Dying Land). His style, both classical and poetic, established him as a defender of heritage and traditional lifestyles in the face of modernity.
Sébastien Bouchard reinterprets the portrait of René Bazin, pairing it with a bouquet of yellow irises (iris des marais), a plant deeply characteristic of the Vendée marshes.
