Following a mural dedicated to the two Martel sculptor brothers, the town of La Garnache in Vendée commissioned artist Sébastien Bouchard to paint a double portrait on the wall of a community hall during its 2026 “Nouveaux reg’arts” arts festival.
The mural creates a dialogue between these two destinies, merging Colette Lebret’s physical ascent of the Himalayas with Simone Veil’s political ascent within the National Assembly. The sharp lines of the snowy ridges mirror the sketched geometry of the hemicycle. Bathed in the same light of high-mindedness, their forward-looking faces embody self-surpassment and the shattering of glass ceilings. This composition stands as a tribute to two pioneers who braved hostile, male-dominated worlds to forge new paths.
