What is this pawing winged horse, painted in a tufa alcove at the Street Art Parc?
It is a detail from ‘Fame Restraining Pegasus’, based on the sculpture by Eugène-Louis Lequesne / photo by Émile Durandelle (1839-1917). The origin of the myth comes from the fusion of two ancient figures: Pegasus, the winged horse born from Medusa embodying poetic inspiration, and Fame, the Roman divinity who spreads great deeds. This association was invented during the Renaissance and later used by Louis XIV to symbolise that the Sun King’s glory would be sung eternally by the arts.
On site, over 60 urban artworks are waiting to be discovered within the incredible natural setting of the Château de Candes-Saint-Martin park. (https://chateaudecandes.com/en/)
